Why document forensics matters in a UK dispute

When a contract, CV, invoice or witness statement is challenged, the argument is rarely about the words on the page — it is about provenance. Who authored the file, was it edited after signature, does the embedded metadata contradict the stated date, and was the text generated by ChatGPT rather than the person who signed it?

Standard PDF viewers hide all of this. Forensic inspection reads the document's XMP and EXIF blocks, incremental save history, digital signature chain and stylometric fingerprint, and turns them into a report you can hand to a tribunal, an auditor, or the other side's solicitor.

Can you tell if a PDF was edited after it was signed?

Yes. The signature validator reads the PDF's incremental save history and compares the byte ranges covered by each signature, so any content added after signing is flagged as an unsigned revision.

How accurate is AI content detection?

The detector returns a confidence score with sentence-level highlights rather than a binary verdict, because no detector is infallible. Use it as a triage signal to decide which documents deserve a human look, not as sole grounds for a decision.
